What is Government Stamping?
Government Stamping is the official process of verifying and weighing equipment, such as weighbridges, platform scales, and precision balances, to ensure accuracy and legal compliance. Conducted by a Legal Metrology Officer (LMO), this process is mandated under the Legal Metrology Act, 2009, and ensures that every commercial weighing device meets national standards. Once verified, the equipment is sealed with a stamp and issued a certification of conformity.
Only government-stamped equipment is legally approved for trade, billing, or regulatory use. Using unstamped or uncertified machines may lead to legal consequences, including fines or imprisonment. The process is governed by both central and state-level legal metrology departments and is critical for ensuring fairness, consumer protection, and audit-readiness in all commercial weighing activities.
Penalties for non-compliance:
- Fine up to ₹25,000 for the first offense
- Up to ₹50,000 or imprisonment for repeated violations
- Tampering with the government stamp is a punishable offense
